Overview

Project Summary

Most pet adoption sites only allow users to view pets available for adoption and the rest is handled at the shelter. This can create a situation of time spent filling out applications, scheduling meetings, waiting for an app approvals, etc.

Project Goal

Create a responsive pet adoption website that allows users to schedule a time to meet adoptable pets at the shelter, submit a general application online, and speed up the time it takes to adopt a pet.

User Research

My research consisted of user interviews to gain insight on how some people adopt pets and if there were any pain points that could be addressed. I then gathered my findings and discovered that although most users are fine with the current pet adoption process, some users were expressing how they had to wait a while to fill out applications, concerns about fee transparency, and being able to find the shelter the dog is at.

With these interviews, I was able to come up with 3 main pain points that came up most often:

Wait Time

Some participants mentioned having to wait in order to fill out an application and have it approved before being able to take their new friend home

Fee Transparency

Adoption fee transparency was mentioned as an issue as some shelters do not disclose prices until you are ready to adopt the pet.

Location Access

Participants mentioned location access and how to get to certain shelters as an issue.

Challenges

One of the main challenges I experienced during the design process was figuring out how much information was necessary to put on the example pet profile page and how much was too much. After consulting with a family member who regularly volunteers at her local shelter and has experience adopting dogs, I was able to figure out the necessary information.

Testing

Due to time constraints, I conducted one unmoderated usability study and gathered feedback while users interacted with my prototype. For the usability study, I sought out participants that had experience adopting pets from an animal shelter as well as people who were currently looking to adopt from a shelter. The feedback I received on the design and the user experience was positive overall from both parties, but I also received feedback on could have been better.

Below is a list of updates I made from the original lo fidelity prototype:

  • Rethink the search bar.
  • Increase font sizes.
  • Choose brand colors using this tool.
  • Compare with screenshots of other websites for icon sizes and typographical patterns.

Impact

Furry Friends decreases the amount of time it takes to adopt a pet by allowing users to submit a digital application, keep track of applications, and ultimately decrease the amount of time needed to adopt a pet.

Final Thoughts

What I Learned

I learned on this project that my initial questions for the usability test were more like instructions rather than scenarios. When my mentor brought this up to me I was able to change my prompts into scenarios for the user to work through instead of instructions. This led to more honest and helpful results to ensure a better user experience.

In The Future

In future iterations I would like to add:

  • Identify additional areas needed and iterate on new features
  • design a flow for a virtual interview feature for shelters that may require a home check or interview before being allowed to meet with a potential pet.
